So I managed to decide on the local issues based on a few websites and newspapers. Beh, not that it's what's important this time around. Iraq is really all that matters.
If the Dem's manage to take control, they better not pull the purse strings too tightly. Nothing could possibly be more important right now than for the ordinary folks over in Iraq to know they can count on us to be there for them. We need their help, and that's not going to happen if they believe that we'll pull out and leave them at the mercy of the Islamofacists. Why is it so hard for us to build up a reputation for reliability?
I guess we'll get the government we deserve one way or another... but the Iraqis will be getting the goverment we deserve as well.

The terrorism in the Middle East (and everywhere else) is not rooted in religion, but desperation. People are starving for food, education, adequate housing, healthcare, and the protection of basic human rights. If we want to secure long-term peace and security anywhere, we need to address those problems.
Doesn't it make sense to ALSO address those problems here in America as well, to secure OUR security?

We're not really having a major problem with any of those domestic issues here, especially not on the level that would give rise to desperation and terrorism. You might have noticed that domestic terrorism is much less frequent than terrorism in the mideast. Addressing those problems here, to the exent that they do exist, isn't going to solve the problem of desperation where it counts.
What will solve that problem is accountable governments. We're working on creating two right now. The problem is, those governments need our help to support until they are self-sufficient; and our support is not as effective as it could be because we need the ordinary folks help too. We need them to tell us who the insurgents are and to participate in the new political systems. If those people believe that we are going to pull out, then even if they believe in the new system, they will not support it because they know that they will suffer reprisals once we leave.
So no, there is NOTHING we can do domestically that will have anywhere near the impact that making our commitment to the cause clear will have (or at least, the impact of appearing to waiver in our commitment).
I'm having a hard time deciding if you're saying that, e.g., improving health care will enhance our security because you actually believe it or because you feel that partisan politics is a fun game to play regardless of the quality of the arguments---either way, it's really dissapointing.
