I really enjoyed the Saddleback discussions, and I thought Obama came ahead big time. McCain was the commensurate politician, he had a answer for everything, made his talking points, told anecdotes in typical cookie cutter politico fashion... The pundits loved him for it...why not, he did exactly as the conventional wisdom said he should, but it left me unimpressed. Obama on the other hand was thoughtful, honest, and in particular on the when does life begin question, appropriately humble. He really did look like a different kind of leader... one who would base polices on what makes sense, that he'd actually think about these issues.... while McCain would be the typical pandering-to-wherever-the-votes-are politician.
It actually put me in a dilemma where I'd have to choose between voting for my issues (McCain) and voting for a better way to run government (Obama).
But now today, in spite of Obama's repeated statements about not taking political cheap shots, he's latching on to this thing about McCain not knowing how many condos he has in his investment portfolio to score cheap political points by painting McCain as out of touch with the common voter.
Hypocrisy. Gotta love it.

Hmm, I kinda think you need to differentiate between Obama-the-person/politician/candidate and media, bloggers, people with agendas.
I believe Obama mocked the "I don't know how many houses I own, I'll get back to you" once or twice. But I haven't heard a thing from him about it in quite some time. Where I've been hearing it is from other democrats who basically think it's the funniest thing ever. I mean, c'mon! The guy painting himself as "grassroots" thinks you're poor if you make less than $5mil a year!
But I understand, I find myself also losing my sense of humor about Obama's foibles. Like when people mock him for not signing any bills during his time in the senate I don't find their ignorance amusing, I find it atrocious.
When they continue to talk about and mock the "bitter clinging to god and guns" comment I don't find it funny. I think it's very hard to have a sense of humor about the candidate you support in this race because it seems so important. And I know that I for one worry every time the republicans make these jokes that they're swaying even one voter.

You probably haven't heard it since the third week of August, back when I wrote this post. :grin: And no, this came directly from the Senator himself, so there's no need to differentiate.

I think you're wrong here. This isn't a joke, it's a serious point. He was being dismissive and patronizing about an significant portion of the electorate. It's either a sign that he's two-faced or that he oversimplifies complex issues. Me, personally, I don't mind the elitist type, and I agree with the religious half of the statement, but it's a foolish thing to say when you need their votes to win. It's a fair--and powerful--point to bring up. It definitely hurts Obama in the contested middle, and it should.
I think if you want to find a comparable instance of cheap shots from the right, the example would be John Edward's haircut. Unless that was something leveled at him from the left during the primary.
